A 62-year-old driver was killed on the spot when he came under the wheels of a van that he had parked near the St. Thomas Mount Shrine on Tuesday morning.
Traffic police said Natesan of Villivakkam early on Tuesday picked up a group of 15 youths, members of the North Madras Cricket Club, who had hired the van on a day-long tour of Chennai. They first reached the shrine. Natesan was advised by local residents not to take the vehicle all the way till the top of the shrine.
Natesan did not heed the advice and after dropping the youth near the shrine, he parked his vehicle on a slope. He got down from the vehicle and tried to place a couple of bricks behind its wheels.
However, the vehicle began to move on its own and Natesan got behind the vehicle and tried to stop, but in vain. He came under the wheels of the vehicle and died on the spot, police added.
Run over
In a freak accident, a lorry driver was run over by a water tanker at a water filling station in R.K. Nagar here on Monday.
According to police sources, Balamurugan (30) of Ezhil Nagar was speaking on his mobile phone when a water tanker, driven by his friend Kesavan, came in the reverse direction and ran over him. The victim suffered grievous injuries and was taken to the Stanley Medical College and Hospital where he died.
