The driver of the speeding van that knocked down a 9-year-old girl on Medavakkam Main Road on Tuesday evening was arrested later in the night. St. Thomas Mount Traffic police said E. Vijaykumar (26) was asked to take the place of the driver who was to drop the children of a school in Madipakkam to their homes in areas around Kovilambakkam and Medavakkam on Tuesday.
Traffic police said the van belonged to a private operator and did not belong to the school. The van's driver had complained of fever, following which Vijaykumar's services were sought by the owner. As per details printed on the van, its Fitness Certificate had expired in May this year.
Taxi driver killed
Meanwhile, the driver of a call taxi was killed on the spot in a hit and run accident on Chennai Bypass in the early hours of Wednesday. Police said B. Sivasankaran (32) was driving a Chevrolet Tavera for a call taxi agency. At 1.45 a.m., he had rammed his vehicle into the barricades on the margins of the Bypass and its tyres had burst on impact. Sivasankaran, who according to police, was under the influence of alcohol, walked across the road and crossed the median, only to be hit by a speeding unknown vehicle.
