The detailed project report (DPR) for the Cooum river restoration project is expected to be ready this month-end.
The State government plans to launch the ambitious project to restore the polluted waterway running across the city in the ensuing fiscal.
Finance Minister O. Panneerselvam in his budget speech said the massive project to restore the waterway that runs for a distance of 16 km will be executed through the Chennai River Restoration Trust.
The project will be implemented over five years at a cost of Rs. 3,833.62 crore. The State allotted Rs. 500 crore in the budget as the first instalment for works to be taken up during 2014-15.
In a bid to clean up the city’s rivers, work to plug 179 sewage outfalls will be completed next year. The scheme to plug 158 more outfalls at a cost of Rs. 163 crore will start in the ensuing fiscal.
The government also allocated Rs. 100 crore towards rejuvenating Chetpet lake and other water bodies in Chennai and other cities.
Meanwhile, Chennai River Restoration Trust has called for a public consultation meeting on Saturday to facilitate residents to provide suggestions on the restoration of water bodies in Zamin Pallavaram, Kilkattalai and Pallikaranai Narayanapuram. The meeting will be held in Anandha Thirumana Maligai, GST Road, Chromepet, from 10am.
