‘DMDK cadres were eyeing local body posts’

April 06, 2016 12:00 am | Updated November 17, 2021 04:44 am IST - CHENNAI:

While the party rebels accused the DMDK leadership of acting arbitrarily in deciding on alliances, a letter, addressed to their leader Vijayakant on March 24 and released on Tuesday, showed how the outfit’s members were banking on a pact with the DMK to obtain positions and recover from economic losses.

The letter was written by the rebels a day after the DMDK finalised an agreement with the People’s Welfare Front (PWF).

The leaders stated in the letter that in 2011 functionaries were eagerly looking forward to contesting the local body polls but were disappointed when the alliance with the AIADMK ended after the Assembly elections.

Now, the letter said, having lost money and properties for the sake of the DMDK, party members were hoping that an alliance with the DMK would help them obtain crucial local body posts. But the decision to align with the PWF had shattered their dreams. “While we expected you (Vijayakant) to seal the alliance with DMK as a balm to relieve the pain we underwent at the hands of the AIADMK, your decision to hold hands with the PWF has made our party members cry in pain,” the letter added.

Incidentally, it was Mr. Chandhirakumar who had released a statement last month denying any talks between the DMDK and the DMK for an electoral alliance. On Tuesday, he however, said there was no stopping the DMK from winning the elections and its leader M. Karunanidhi being sworn in Chief Minister.
