Two men, who were part of a Delhi-based gang and were on a chain-snatching spree in several parts of the city, were nabbed by the police in Vepery. The gang members often flew down to Chennai from Delhi and indulged in crime.

A senior police officer said, “We have been shadowing them for long. They are involved in over two dozen cases in the city, as well as nearly 1,000 cases across the country.”

The suspects — Sandeep, 32, and Sanjay Vijay, 42, are believed to be the kingpins of the gang. Police sources added that the gang comprised 10 members from Delhi.

The gang members, after having landed in the city, would stay in a lodge on Walltax Road. While two members remained in the room, two others would look for easy targets on a stolen bike. After several successful thefts, they would fly back to Delhi.

A police officer said, “The gang always would target women wearing jewellery and walking alone on the street. After analysing CCTV footage, we zeroed in on the gang and after following them for quite long, we nabbed the two men. The others are yet to be rounded up.”
