Deepa’s supporters assaulted

Tension prevailed at the Tondiarpet zonal office of Chennai Corporation for a while after a scuffle between the supporters of the ruling All India Anna Dravinda Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) and Deepa Jayakumar (niece of former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa) on Tuesday night.

Even as the Returning Officer appointed for the Radhakrishnan Nagar byelection was holding an enquiry into the nomination petition of actor Vishal, Deepa Jayakumar visited the office located at Tiruvottiyur High Road in Tondiarpet.

While the enquiry was in progress regarding the nomination petition (which was later rejected by the Returning Officer) of actor Vishal, the supporters of Deepa Jayakumar made ‘derogatory’ comments against E. Madhusudanan, the AIADMK party candidate for the byelection.

On hearing the remarks, the supporters of Mr. Madhusudanan assaulted the supporters of Deepa Jayakumar even as a huge posse of policemen watched the assault.

Later a group of policemen bundled a victim and sent him in an autorickshaw.

A senior officer of the Chennai city police said no police case has been filed against the assaulters.
