They alleged medical negligence in the death of the 27-year-old

Traffic was disrupted for more than an hour on Valluvar Kottam High Road, Nungambakkam, on Wednesday when family members of a young woman and cadres of a political party, squatted on the arterial road seeking action against a hospital for alleged medical negligence.

Saranya, a 27-year-old woman, who was admitted to a private hospital at Nungambakkam for a gynaecological procedure, developed complications during the procedure and had to be shifted to another private hospital, where she died on Tuesday night.

The family members demanded that the police take action against the hospital authorities for medical negligence. Suresh Kumar, Saranya's husband, charged that she had died due to “wrong medical treatment”. The couple has a four-year-old boy.

Hospital authorities denied any medical negligence. Mr. Rajagopal, who said he was an administrator at the hospital, said Saranya was a regular patient and had come for what is usually classified as an out-patient procedure on Monday. But, there was a complication and she was advised to check in as an in-patient for surgery on Tuesday. During the surgery, her condition deteriorated and she was rushed to a private speciality hospital for emergency treatment, where she died.

A police official said the woman’s husband had filed a complaint. Based on it, an FIR has been registered under Section 174 of the Criminal Procedure Code (death under circumstances raising a reasonable suspicion that some other person has committed an offence). Police are waiting for the post-mortem report.
