Gold chain missing
A gold chain was reported missing from a temple at Otteri here on Friday.
According to police sources, the priest of Muthalamman Temple on Devi Bhavani Ellaiaman Temple Street noticed the five-sovereign chain on the idol of the goddess missing when he opened the temple on Friday evening.
A woman was allegedly robbed of her handbag containing three debit cards, mobile phone and some cash at Thiruvanmiyur on Friday evening.According to police, R. Sundari (50) of Tiruvalluvar Nagar was returning home from work when a motorcycle-borne youth snatched her handbag and escaped. Even as she managed to block transactions in two debit cards, the suspect used the third card and purchased a mobile phone for Rs. 9,500. The Thiruvanmiyur police have registered a case.
Held for attack
Two youths who allegedly assaulted a car driver and tried to drive away the vehicle on Friday were arrested by the Triplicane police.
According to police sources, Prakash (38) of Kodungaiyur and Salim Kumar (30) of Shenoy Nagar assaulted car driver Dawood (49) and tried to snatch the vehicle key. Passers-by caught the two and handed them over to the local police. Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused were working in a private firm that arranged finance to Samiullah (37) of Royapettah for purchasing the car.
Though he repaid the loan amount in 2009, the accused told his car driver Dawood that some money was still pending and tried to take away the vehicle.
Inspector (Triplicane) S. Pandian said the two were arrested on charges of extortion and criminal intimidation. They were produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.
Detained under Goondas Act
Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran has ordered the detention of a suspect involved in many crimes, including chain-snatching offences, under the Goondas Act. According to police sources, a special team of Pattinapakkam police, led by Inspector P. Ramamurthy, intercepted two persons who came on a motorcycle on November 1.
The two gave contradictory versions on the ownership of the bike. During interrogation, the accused, R. Alimuddin (22) and R. Sardar (20) of Old Washermenpet, confessed to having snatched gold chains from women walking in the North Chithirai Kulakkarai Road and Karaneeswarar Temple Street.
Since Alimuddin was already involved in other crimes, he was detained under the Goondas Act, the sources added.
Held with weapon
A 34-year-old man was found having weapon during a vehicle check conducted in Royapettah on Saturday evening. According to police, Krishnamurthy alias ‘Orai' Krishnamurthy of Perambur was held for having a country-made gun without ammunition during the vehicle check. He is already involved in cases at MKB Nagar and Sembium police stations. He has been detained at Royapettah police station .
