Actor found dead

J. Shobana (30), who has acted in several Tamil films and television serials, allegedly committed suicide at her house in Kotturpuram on Monday. According to police sources, the woman was found hanging from the ceiling by her mother. The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem.

Man tries to escape, injured

A man who allegedly tried to escape fearing police action fell and suffered injuries in Royapettah on Sunday.

Police said a special team raided a hotel in the Royapettah area following information that some persons were indulging in gambling there. On seeing the police, Jahir Hussain of Mannadi took to his heels. While trying to scale a wall, he slipped. He was admitted to a nearby hospital.

Police detained four persons on charges of gambling. Rs. 8,500 was recovered from the suspects.

Woman robbed

A man who sneaked into a house allegedly robbed a woman at knifepoint at Alwarpet on Sunday. According to police sources, Chandramukhi (65), a retired bank employee, was alone at home when she realised that a stranger was hiding under the bed. When she tried to raise an alarm, the suspect brandished a knife and forced the woman to part with valuables in the house.

He took away seven sovereigns of gold jewels and Rs. 11,000 cash. The Teynampet police are investigating.

In another case, Bhagyam (54) of Saidapet lodged a complaint with the police that burglars had stolen Rs. 1 lakh cash and some silver utensils from her house. The woman returned home after work on Sunday evening and found the main door lock broken.

Car missing

A car owned by a former Member of Parliament was reported missing on Sunday. According to police sources, Mano, driver of former MP Kalanithi, lodged a complaint that some persons kidnapped him near the Egmore railway station. They drove away with the car after forcing him out near Pallavaram. Preliminary investigation revealed that an altercation took place between Mano and some persons near the Egmore railway station following a minor mishap. No motive for the kidnap of theft of car could be established based on the information given by the complainant. A special team has been formed to investigate, the sources added.
