CPI(M) slams Centre for cutting fuel subsidy

July 10, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:46 am IST - CHENNAI:

The CPI(M) on Saturday condemned the Centre’s directive which states that people would risk losing their fuel subsidy if they did not register their Aadhar card numbers with their bank or gas company.

“This shocking directive will affect the poor and the middle class,” the CPI(M) said in a statement.

‘Against public interest’

The Supreme Court had already stated that Aadhar card was not necessary for people to obtain government subsidy and avail themselves of the benefits of government scheme, the party said, adding that the government had stopped giving subsidy to those who did not register their Aadhar card number. “It goes against the interest of the people,” the statement said.

Further pointing out that only 60 lakh out of 162 lakh families have obtained Aadhar card, the CPI(M) said that the government’s directive that subsidy would be cut if Aadhar card is not obtained by September 30 is an indirect way of cutting subsidy.
