The Communist Party of India, which will be contesting in 25 seats in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections in alliance with the DMDK, People’s Welfare Front and Tamil Maanila Congress, announced the list of candidates on Monday. The CPI will contest in seven reserved seats.
“We are happy that we got the constituencies where we have a good chance to win. Apart from nine district CPI secretaries, we have given tickets to two women candidates and nine Dalit candidates,” said Mutharasan, State secretary, CPI.
“It has been decided that nine senior members of the party holding important posts, including myself, will not be contesting in the elections. We will work for the victory of our candidates,” he said. Noted CPI leaders Nallakannu and D. Pandian will also campaign for the party candidates.
CPI national general secretary D. Raja said the time had come for the people of Tamil Nadu to choose an alternative. “There have been many experiments before. I think the time is right for a coalition government in Tamil Nadu.”
