Corporation seeks 30 days for work

November 22, 2014 01:47 am | Updated April 09, 2016 11:05 am IST - CHENNAI:

Resuming work on Kodambakkam Bridge on Monday, Chennai Corporation has asked the Traffic Police for permission to complete the work in 30 days.

Challenges in completing the Railways’ portion of the bridge and the weak structural condition of the lower portion of the structure were said to be the major reasons for the delay. A Chennai Corporation official said completion of work on strengthening of the lower portion of the bridge is expected to speed up the work.

“We will not be able to work during rainy days. The work may be delayed by a few days because of rains,” said an official.

The proposal to complete the work in 12 days using M60 grade of concrete was not possible because of the structural condition of the bridge in June. “Additional equipment can be used on the structure now. Now, at least 13 tractor-mounted compressor tools are being used,” the official said.

Normal traffic flow will resume in December and the entire bridge will be ready in March. Work on retrofitting of Kodambakkam Bridge was delayed following opposition from encroachers and traffic police restrictions. Traffic police permitted work from November to July. Work was interrupted during the Lok Sabha elections.
