Oil companies are planning to ask consumers who are yet to join the Pahal scheme, the deadline for which closes on Tuesday, to forgo their LPG subsidy.

As much as 10.15 per cent of the 1.54 crore customers in the State have not joined the scheme.

“If after all this time they still are not Pahal-compliant it means they are not interested in getting subsidised cylinders. We will be sending application forms to these persons through dealers asking them to give up the subsidy,” an oil industry source said.

Oil company sources said only those who had joined the scheme would get the subsidy on the cylinders after July 1. Those who wanted to join the scheme could do so by providing the details of their bank accounts to their LPG dealers/agencies, sources said.

Presently, consumers purchase cylinders at market price and the subsidy amount is sent to their bank accounts. A total of 15.15 lakh consumers in Chennai; 8.59 lakh in Kancheepuram; and 7.64 lakh in Tiruvallur districts; have joined the scheme.

In the State, Perambalur, with nine distributors and 91,988 consumers, has seen the highest compliance of 91.83 per cent (84,470 consumers). This is followed by Tiruchirapalli where 5.31 lakh consumers of the total 5.79 lakh have joined the scheme.

After March, issues including non-payment of subsidy, wrong entries, and instances of consumers opting out of the scheme inadvertently had been reported, a dealer said.

“A lot of bugs are cropping up,” he said. As per rules, the subsidy component was given up only for one financial year. Consumers could make a choice after that, he said.
