A police constable, who allegedly harassed a college student, has been placed under suspension and departmental action has been initiated against him.
The girl, a resident of Thanduma Nagar near Kathipara, was returning from college on Friday. While she was nearing the police quarters, Gerald, a constable attached to the Shankar Nagar Police Station, allegedly harassed her.
Taxi drivers who were in the vicinity intervened and an argument broke out between them and the constable. Policemen attached to the St. Thomas Mount Station detained him for interrogation.
Subsequently, residents staged a protest demanding action against the constable. They dispersed after senior police officers pacified them. City Police Commissioner T.K. Rajendran ordered a probe. The constable has been placed under suspension after preliminary investigation, police sources said.
