The much-awaited syndicate elections at the University of Madras are scheduled to take place on Thursday.
Twelve candidates are contesting for four positions in the syndicate, the highest decision-making body of the university.
Senior professors and syndicate members have however raised concerns over the participation of several candidates.
“At least three of the candidates have had allegations raised against them. While one, the principal of a city college, has been charged with embezzlement of funds in an audit report, another has been accused of land-grabbing. It is not right to let such candidates take over the syndicate,” said a senior professor.
Some of the professors have also written to higher education officials to put a check on the candidature of such persons.
“Also, the same members who have been part of the syndicate for several years keep contesting again. It will be better if new people come in so that there is no monopolising of ideas,” said a former syndicate member.
The syndicate looks into the everyday affairs of the university and also makes decisions on addition and deletion of colleges, functioning of affiliated colleges and appointment issues.
