Commuters boarding MTC buses have requested the Metropolitan Transport Corporation and Greater Chennai Corporation to create a bus bay at the SPIC stop on Sardar Patel Road.

The shelter at the stop, abutting the pavement, poses a risk to commuters.“Often, motorcyclists ride dangerously close to where commuters stand,” says S. Vinod, a commuter.

Not only that, the space behind the designated halting point is littered with trash. The pavements are broken and also strewn with waste. Motorists going towards Race Course Road drive at a breakneck speed. Vehicle users do not follow lane discipline, and overtake at will. They also drive in the wrong direction.

With the creation of a bus stop on the stretch, a long-pending demand was met. Now all route numbers made to halt at the bus stop. Earlier, when the stop was located on Anna Salai, only ‘White’ and a few ‘Green’ board route numbers would halt there.

Students of Chellammal Women’s College, Anna Salai, and staff of companies and commercial establishments on Sardar Patel Road and Anna Salai used to alight either at SPIC or Race Course bus stop opposite Guindy Railway Station.

Bus commuters used to either walk quite a distance from the stop or engage regular autos during rush hour to reach their workplaces.
