The residents of Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar seem to have despaired of seeing the community hall on SRP Koil Street (North) renovated in the near future.
The community hall, which belongs to the Chennai Corporation, has been in a dilapidated state for more than a decade. The residents complain that requests to the civic body to take steps to renovate the building have only fallen on deaf ears.
G. Devarajan, a social activist from Sembium, said a large number of families in Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar and Sembium are economically backward. The residents of the localities have been making several representations to the local officials of the Chennai Corporation to take steps to renovate the community hall, as they cannot afford to hold functions at private halls.
Moreover, the building housing the community hall is in a pathetic condition with people using it as a public toilet.
R. Ashok, a resident of Bashyam Street in Perambur, said the community hall located opposite the Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar bus terminus has also become a den for anti-social elements. They use it for drunken revelries. He regretted that there were no efforts to exploit the commercial potential of the hall.
