Lt. Governor Kiran Bedi on Tuesday said that media such as the radio, newspaper and television can greatly enhance the responsibility of citizens by serving as a platform for communication between the public and the government.

Addressing the tenth anniversary celebrations of FM Rainbow (102.8) of All India Radio, Puducherry, Ms. Bedi emphasised the powerful role of communication in smooth governance.

She commended the AIR, Puducherry, for its efforts in successfully broadcasting details about government schemes, important information and programmes, including Mann Ki Baat by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and her own monthly messages.

Ms. Bedi also suggested that programmes such as ‘Ask Me’ should be implemented wherein the public can put forward their queries about governance.

“The public must be able to access all information that is available to them. Their queries can be forwarded to the government and it will be answered by a person in-charge in the Raj Nivas,” she added.

She also pointed out that more the society is kept informed, the more there will be dissemination of knowledge which in turn will help maintain law and order in the society.

The Lt. Governor also added that an in-house radio for the Government of Puducherry will be helpful in effective governance. She also said that it is imperative to have platforms through which higher officials can be contacted by the public to have their queries answered. FM Rainbow, which commenced broadcast in 2008, still serves as the primary channel of the All India Radio, Puducherry.

G. Selvam, HOP AIR, Puducherry, N. Leelavathy, HOO AIR, Puducherry and S. Elangovan, AD (E) AIR, Puducherry, headed the ceremony.
