Commissioner of Police T. Rajendran on Friday said Quick Reaction Teams drawn from the Tamil Nadu Commando Force (TNCF) will be stationed strategically to handle any exigency, including terror attack, in Chennai.

“In the wake of the 26/11 attack in Mumbai, security was stepped up at vital installations, areas of public gathering, malls and important railway stations. Three major mock drills – Operation Barricade, Operation Rakshak and Operation Hamla – were conducted across the State to check the efficacy of security agencies. We will now have three commando teams for quick reaction in Chennai,” he said.

Mr. Rajendran said a Standard Operating Procedure had been defined for the commando teams. “The first team will reach any scene of disturbance within thirty minutes…the other two will follow in less than an hour. Special teams of the Chennai Police were trained to provide intelligence, launch investigation and manage the media during emergencies,” he said.

A crisis management team comprising the Commissioner of Police, Corporation Commissioner, Director of Medical Services, Director, Fire and Rescue Services, among others would meet to devise other strategies. “Apart from the international airport, two major railway stations and a huge bus terminus (Koyambedu), we have to guard the 44-km coastline, IT corridor and other vulnerable areas,” he said.

On the progress of investigation in the case registered by the Central Crime Branch against former IPL chairman Lalit Modi and six others, Mr. Rajendran said some crucial documents were sought in the case. “Once we receive the documents, investigators will decide on the next level of action. He (Lalit Modi) is out of the country,” he said.
