A 21-year-old college student was killed and 14 persons were injured when the bus they were travelling in veered off Maduravoyal-Perungulathur Bypass Road and overturned on Saturday morning.
According to the police, the bus, run by the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation, was travelling from Chennai to Salem. Near Tiruneermalai, the driver, Ranganathan (50) of Vellore district, reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The police said he hit the brakes to avoid colliding with a two-wheeler, and, as a result, the bus swerved off the road and turned over on its side. As it was drizzling when the accident occurred, the road was slippery, Ranganathan told The Hindu .
S. Satyadarshini, a third-year engineering student from Thuraiyur, died on the spot. She had been in the city for the past one month for project work with an engineering college in Kattankulathur, said a relative who arrived at Chromepet GH.
The injured passengers were taken to Tamabaram Taluk Hospital in Chromepet and a private hospital in Tambaram for treatment. While most of them suffered minor injuries, two of them, Ganesamurthi (25) and Vetrivendhan (50), and the bus conductor, Jaishankar (45), were referred to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for specialty treatment.
The accident disrupted traffic for more than two hours. Normal flow was restored around 1 p.m. after the wreckage was removed.
The Chromepet traffic investigation wing has registered a case.
