Coach tours to Switzerland still popular among TN tourists

September 03, 2015 12:00 am | Updated March 28, 2016 03:01 pm IST - CHENNAI:

While people across the country are opting to go on tours as individuals and families, visitors from Tamil Nadu heading to Switzerland still opt for coach tours, according to data available with Switzerland Tourism.

“Out of every four coached tours that go to Switzerland from India, two of them are from Tamil Nadu, Ritu Sharma, deputy director, Switzerland Tourism said.

Travellers from Chennai seem to be divided, with half of them opting for coached tours, and the other half travelling individually.

“Many of the people we see coming to Switzerland are those travelling to the U.S. to visit their children who are settled there. They often take a week off so they can tour the country, and since they are senior citizens, they seem to prefer coached tours,” she said.

Online bookings

Another trend that seems to be emerging with tourists is that the individual travellers prefer to make all their bookings online.

“Earlier, travellers would do their research online, but still book with travel agents. But, even that seems to be changing. Travel agents are mainly being used only to book tickets,” Ms. Sharma added.

Winter packages

This year, Switzerland Tourism is offering two winter packages for Indian tourists. “Switzerland is a winter destination for the rest of the world, but Indians typically do not visit in December. This year, we are offering a Pure Winter package, with sledging, snow shoe walking and other ‘soft’ adventures, and a cozy winter, which is a way to enjoy wellness packages, hot springs and Christmas Markets,” she said.
