A day after four fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday seeking to intervene in the matter and secure their release.
“I request the Government of India to act decisively to find tangible mechanisms to permanently resolve this vexatious issue affecting the livelihood of lakhs of our fishermen from Tamil Nadu,” she wrote to Mr. Modi.
Diplomatic channels
She further insisted that the officials of the Ministry of External Affairs be instructed to take “concrete action through diplomatic channels” to secure the immediate release of these fishermen from Rameswaram fishing base.
Recalls earlier letters
Recalling her repeated letters to the Prime Minister over the Sri Lankan government's “inhumane and cruel strategy” in delaying the release of the boats and fishing gear of these fishermen, Ms. Jayalalithaa also urged that all 84 boats presently in Lankan custody be released.
