In about two months, Chennai that was once Madras, will turn 376. To commemorate the founding of the historic city on August 22, 1639, a number of organisations will be coming together to mark the event. This year, Madras Week will be observed from August 16 to 23.

Technically though, the celebrations will be spread throughout August and continue till the first week of September. These include walks, quiz contests, and other events.

As has been the practice in past years, Chennai Heritage will be hosting eight talks at various locations on subjects related to the city. It will also lead several heritage walks in the city during the week-long celebrations.

This year too, hotels will take part and while some will be venues for talks, others will host art and photographic exhibitions besides organising food festivals with ‘Madras cuisine’ as theme. Art galleries and cultural centres will also play a role in the celebrations. The celebrations have also spread to suburbs like Tambaram.

Those who are planning events can send details to the following e-mail IDs:editor@madrasmusings.com and themadrasday@gmail.com. Details will be uploaded onwww.themadrasday.in and the mobile app Madras Week. In addition, a multi-page booklet with programmes will also be published and distributed closer to the date of the event by Madras Musings.
