Chennai Rain: schools to remain closed in the city and seven districts

City has recorded 56.6 cm in five days, CM Palaniswami says

Schools will remain closed in Chennai, Kanchipuram, Thiruvallur, Vellore, Tiruvannamalai, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam and Tiruvarur districts on Monday.

Sun came out in Chennai and its neighbouring districts on Sunday, bringing respite to people for the second day and raising hopes of stagnant water receding.

Heavy rain at isolated places is very likely over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Monday.

Inspecting various relief works across the city, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Sunday  admitted that 115 places were still waterlogged in Chennai city and its suburbs and attributed it to the heavy downpour over the past five days.

He added that the northeast monsoon in two months usually brings around 79 cm rainfall, but the city and its suburbs have already recorded 56.6 cm in five days.
