Crocodile Fears

Rumour: Crocodiles escaped from the Madras Crocodile Bank and are in Medavakkam/Sholinganallur or other areas in the city.

Truth: Madras Crocodile Bank, on its Facebook page, has consistently said all their crocodiles are safe. “We are not compromised. No crocodiles have escaped from our facility. No walls are damaged. All precautionary measures are being taken” the message said.

Playing with Lives

Rumour: There are 70 cancer patients at the Institute of Children’s Health and Hospital for Children, Egmore, who need blood and there have been unnatural deaths at the hospital.

Truth: The Institute of Child Health has stated that that there are no 70 cancer patients, there is enough blood and there are no unnatural deaths. “This is a false WhatsApp message and this has to be condemned,” a message from the hospital said.

Let the Big cats speak up

Rumour: Water flow has damaged walls inside Vandalur Zoo, especially enclosure of the big cats, waiting to get out

Truth: Only a portion of the compound wall on the zoo's periphery was damaged. All animals are safe and taken care of, said officials of Forest Department

Bridge story gone too far

Rumour: Bridges across the Adyar river in the city have developed cracks and motorists have been advised to avoid them.

Truth: The State Highways Department has categorically stated that the bridges are absolutely safe and there is no cause for concern. There are no cracks on bridges, nor have they weakened due to the increase water flow.

Information glitch

Rumour: Lakes along Old Mamallapuram Road have breached and water is entering residential localities in Kelambakkam and Tirupporur.

Truth: The Public Works Department has clarified that lakes along OMR are safe and that their team of officials and staff were on duty round the clock to monitor the situation.
