Residents can expect some mild showers on Thursday as a trough of low pressure area persists over the southwest Bay of Bengal.
Wednesday remained a largely cloudy day with only a drizzle in some areas, including Teynampet and Anna Nagar. Residents noted that it was very windy.
As in the previous rain spells this northeast monsoon, localities in south Tamil Nadu will have an edge over other parts of the State. S.R. Ramanan, director of Area Cyclone Warning Centre, said many places in the coastal areas, particularly in southern parts of the State, will get rain for one or two days. “Localities in delta districts may get heavy rains. Gusty surface winds will blow in Chennai,” he said.
However, these rains may not be enough to cover the deficit in annual rainfall. Chennai has so far got only 119 cm of its yearly quota of 140 cm of rainfall. The water storage position in city reservoirs is dismal owing to lack of rains. But, increase in Krishna water supply to the city over the past few days has helped preventing a further dip in storage.
Weather bloggers expect that there may be four or five weather systems before the monsoon winds up over the region this month. Blogger S. Velayudham said: “We expect some rainfall over the State around Christmas. South Tamil Nadu will have rains. We have to wait to see how much of rainfall it will bring to Chennai.”
