In the coming months a train journey will probably not be boring. You can browse the web, check mails or watch your favourite movie online, and get alerted when the train reaches your destination.
This is among the various information technology initiatives that were presented by Railway minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda in the budget on Tuesday.
Workstations on select trains on payment basis, WiFi services in all A1 and A category stations and on select trains, mobile-based wakeup call system for passengers and destination arrival alert are among the various schemes announced by the minister.
“It is a good initiative. My job requires me to check e-mails frequently. Besides, the wakeup call facility will be helpful for those who reach their destination in the early hours,” said M. Ragunandan, who works inan FMCG company.
Besides, the minister also pointed out that coin operated, automatic ticket-vending machines will be set up on an experimental basis and the Railways will also introduce parking-cum-platform combo tickets. Introduction of an online system for the purchase of platform tickets and unreserved tickets is also on the anvil.
