A depression over west-central Bay of Bengal may put an end to nippy weather and the long dry spell in Chennai.
According to the Regional Meteorological Centre here, north coastal districts, including Chennai and Puducherry, may have rainfall on Wednesday and Thursday under the influence of the depression, which lays centred about 650 km east-northeast of Chennai and 440 km southeast of Visakhapatnam.
It may move west-southwestwards towards south Andhra Pradesh and north Tamil Nadu coasts and weaken into a well-marked low pressure area on Tuesday. However, the city is not likely to get much rain on Tuesday. Gusty wind would blow through the day.
Residents and meteorologists are hoping for rainfall as a gap of 51 cm of annual rainfall remains to be offset. On an average, the city gets 140 cm of rainfall every year.
Officials of the meteorological department said there have been occasions when the city got a large percentage of rainfall during December. Cyclone Thane, for instance, hit the Tamil Nadu coast during end of December last year.
