Work on Monorail may begin only in 2015

November 29, 2014 10:13 am | Updated 10:13 am IST - CHENNAI:

By the time construction for the Chennai Monorail project begins, it might well be June 2015, experts say.

The bidding process has begun, officials in Tamil Nadu say, but procedural formalities for a project of this scale will take time to complete.

The current round of bidding process is the third since the revival of the project by the present government that took over in May 2011.

The first round was carried out during August-December 2011, by inviting request for qualifications. Not satisfied with the limited number of participants, the authorities scrapped it and went in for the second round.

Only a couple of prospective promoters were shortlisted, but these firms did not participate in the bidding process. Around August 2013, the second tender lapsed.

In February this year, the third round was initiated. Two bidders are in the fray and it is expected that three more months will be required for awarding the contract.
