Seven subways on the cards in Chennai

July 16, 2014 11:08 am | Updated April 22, 2016 01:15 am IST - CHENNAI:

Seven locations near key road junctions in the city will get pedestrian subways this year.

Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Tuesday announced the project to commission pedestrian facilities at spots that had recorded a rise in traffic flow in a recent study.

According to the study, a large number of pedestrians were crossing the junction of Kamarajar Salai-Dr.Radhakrishnan Salai near Gandhi Statue on the Marina beach. The proposed subway will facilitate easy access for pedestrians from neighbourhoods of Mylapore and Triplicane to the Marina, said an official of Chennai Corporation.

Pedestrian subways will also be commissioned at two locations on Arcot Road — near Meenakshi College and Vadapalani Bus Terminus. Puraswalkam Gangadeeswarar Koil Street, Konnur High Road in Ayanavaram, Inner Ring Road in Arumbakkam near metro station and GST Road in Alandur will also get pedestrian subways this year.

A public consultation will be conducted for the projects shortly. “A number of pedestrian subways are not disabled friendly. The State government should advise the Chennai Corporation and the Highways Department to design the subways to facilitate movement of senior citizens and persons with disability,” said P. Simmachandran, General Secretary, Federation of Tamil Nadu Physically Handicapped Associations.
