Stating that genuine mediators who were dependent solely on the realty sector would never indulge in dubious land transactions, an organisation has urged the State government to create a welfare board to take care of the interests of people involved in the sector.
C. Chinnadurai, State president of Thamizhaga Nila Tharagargal Nala Sangam (TN Land Mediators Welfare Association), said several lakh people were engaged in the industry, but not all of them took home enough money to look after their families’ needs.
“People who are into this business full-time never indulge in illegal transactions, but the trade is filled with people with political affiliations who create problems,” he said.
Unlike in Chennai where property value is high and mediators can hope to earn considerable sums of money as commission in a single transaction, in the districts, the scenario wasn’t as bright, the association said.
Real estate mediators contributed immensely to the State exchequer by way of charges remitted at the sub-registrar offices after land transactions.
The creation of a welfare board and identity cards to avail of government schemes would be a boon to them and their families, said Mr. Chinnadurai.
