Plea to add more areas to Corporation limits

Government is likely to study civic conditions in such panchayats before taking a decision on merger

November 30, 2014 09:25 am | Updated 09:25 am IST - CHENNAI:

Incomplete road connectivity among wards of the Chennai Corporation in added areas seems to have forced Corporation councillors to demand inclusion of a few more panchayats in the city limits.

Civic facilities, including road connectivity, stormwater drains, solid waste management and public health infrastructure in the areas added to the Chennai Corporation, are reportedly affected because of inadequate infrastructure in nearby panchayats.

“Some of the panchayats have poor civic infrastructure. But the Corporation wards nearby are witnessing rapid infrastructure development. We have requested urban planners to offer a solution,” said a councillor from an added area of the Corporation.

The residents have appealed to the councillors to impress upon the government the need for merger of such areas with the Corporation. The government is likely to study civic conditions in such panchayats located close to the Corporation zones before taking a decision on merger.

CMDA urban planners said the delay in implementing the proposal for creation of two additional municipal corporations covering Tambaram and Avadi was likely to offer hope of merger of some panchayats with the city.
