December 18, 2014 08:06 am | Updated 08:10 am IST - CHENNAI:

Around 1,000 civic body officials are set to shift their work spaces to a new building. The Ripon Buildings annexe, renamed Amma Maaligai, will begin functioning from Pongal.

The building will house the largest number of civic body officials in the city. With all departments of Chennai Corporation headquarters shifting to the new building, the structure is expected to emerge as a landmark in the city. The offices of the Mayor and Commissioner will continue to be in Ripon Buildings.

The departments to be shifted include bus route roads, stormwater drain, solid waste management, buildings, electrical and mechanical departments. The Chennai Corporation has finished work on the 1.5 lakh-sq ft Amma Maaligai at a cost of Rs. 23 crore.

After January 15, the premises will have additional parking space for 50 cars and 150 motorcycles.

Key meetings and conferences will be held in a 500-seat auditorium and 100-seat conference hall in the building that combines post-modern style with traditional architecture.
