The power utility Tangedco is ramping up its distribution network by building new sub-stations in the city where power consumption has been going up every year.

Tangedco officials say these sub-stations are being developed to give relief to overloaded ones, which develop snags due to a surge in power demand at peak hours.

A senior official said improvement works were given top priority as they are the revenue centre, and as part of the infrastructure development works 27 new sub-stations of 33/11 KV capacity were planned in two years.

While four new sub-stations, at Greams Road, P.T. Rajan Salai in Ashok Nagar, Kovilambakkam and Rajkilpakkam, have been completed, the remaining 23 are under progress.

New sub-stations are proposed to be constructed at Madhavaram Leather Estate, Tiruvottiyur, R.V. Nagar, Kolathur, Korattur, Manali, McNichols Road, Vaigai Colony in Anna Nagar, Chitlapakkam, Ezhil Nagar and in space allotted by multi-storey apartments on Rajiv Gandhi Salai, Mudichur and Tirumangalam.

The sub-stations were being built under the Restructured Accelerated Power Development and Reforms Programme (RAPDRP) and were planned to be commissioned before the end of 2015, he said.

Issues relating to land acquisition are hampering the construction of sub-stations at Chinmaya Nagar, George Town, and Munusamy Salai in K.K. Nagar. A senior official said a 230/33-KV sub-station at Mambalam had been proposed and was at an advanced stage of tendering. There was also a proposal to construct 110/33/11-KV sub-stations at Saidapet and Pulianthope, he added.

Proposals were being worked out for sub-stations at Porur, Pallikaranai, Keelkattalai, Kolapakkam, Seethalapakkam, Moovarasampet, Vandalur, Zameen Pallavaram and New Vadapalani, officials said.
