Adambakkam residents have taken up the responsibility of cleaning up and rejuvenating the lake with help from various government agencies.
More than 150 members of various associations and children recently participated in the lake cleaning campaign mooted by Adambakkam Lake Cleaning and Rejuvenation Committee. They removed thorny bushes, pet bottles, sachets and other material from the lake bed. The lake remains almost dry, which helped volunteers in their task. Various games were held on the lake bed.
The lake, which once covered more than 100 hectares, is today less than one-tenth the size.
According to residents’ associations, the rejuvenation of the lake will help improve the groundwater table in Adambakkam and Nanganallur areas.
The restoration of the lake is expected to prevent flooding in Nanganallur Thillai Ganga Nagar subway, and areas of Adambakkam.
V. Rama Rao co-ordinator for the project, appreciated the gesture of PWD department in clearing the bushes by employing earthmovers and also that of Corporation zonal officials in removing tonnes of rubbish and wooden logs thrown in the lake over the years.
