Work on infrastructure projects that was stalled over the last few months is all set to proceed quickly

May 21, 2014 04:05 am | Updated November 27, 2021 06:56 pm IST - CHENNAI:

Residents of the city can now heave a huge sigh of relief as development works are all set to pick up pace.

Chennai Corporation will resume key civic development works in most of the 15 zones in the city. Following objections by opposition parties, the civic body had suspended work on most of the projects in the run-up to the elections.

The major works to resume include LED streetlights, roads, stormwater drains, canals, cycle sharing system and restoration of ponds with walkways and greenery.

Road projects including works on Marina Loop Road and cement concrete roads on 12 bus routes at Rs. 76 crore will also resume this week.

“Stormwater drains and canals will be improved before this north east monsoon. Work on removal of encroachments in Mambalam canal, MGR canal, Jafferkhanpet canal, Vysarpadi canal and Ekangipuram canal will start this summer. Over 3,000 families along Mambalam canal will get new houses on the outskirts,” said an official.

Aspects of Cooum restoration will take a little while longer, officials said.

Work on integrated facilities for healthcare including new 40-bedded community health centres for secondary healthcare and primary health centres are expected to improve public health for 18 lakh slum residents.

“Work on the cycle sharing system also failed to kick off after notification of elections. Over 200 docking stations for cycle sharing system will connect Anna Salai and Marina beach neighbourhoods in the first phase,” said an official. A meeting on cycle sharing system will be held on Wednesday to speed up the project.
