Tambaram will get another pedestrian foot overbridge on the GST Road near the railway station. The facility is estimated to cost Rs.12 crore as it will have escalators too.
Sources in the Highways department said that they will soon call for tenders for a consultant to prepare the detailed project report. Chief Minister Jayalalithaa had announced the project in the Assembly.
“A large volume of pedestrians cross the road near the railway station, which is why we chose that location,” explained a source. Though there is a zebra crossing at the point, many are forced to scurry across since traffic wont stop.
C. Suriya, a resident of Nagarathinam Nagar in West Tambaram said that an FOB with escalators at MEPZ would be very helpful to pedestrians. “Similarly, the bridge should be connected to the one inside the railway station.
This would help eliminate the problem of pedestrian traffic from in front of the station where pre-paid autorickshaw and call taxi stands make it difficult for them to enter and exit the station,” he said.
Meanwhile, the FOBs at Chromepet and MEPZ have proved to be of great use to commuters.
Every day, over 43,500 persons take the Chromepet facility and 28,000 use the one near MEPZ.
The three FOBs at Anna Nagar near SBOA school and two in Velachery are used by over 2,500 persons daily.
