A city hospital will connect with medical students in various SAARC countries through a live demonstration of laparoscopic hernia and bariatric surgeries on Saturday.
Lifeline Rigid Hospitals will conduct the online surgical classes for universities and hospitals in Sri Lanka, Maldives, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Oman.
At least 80 to 100 students — in final-year MBBS and MS — assistant professors and surgeons are expected to participate at each of these centres, said J.S. Rajkumar, chairman and chief surgeon of the hospital.
This is part of the department of science and technology’s initiative to showcase Indian talent. Such online classes will be held once a month from now, he said.
“This online platform will help in taking forward medical education. We will demonstrate laparoscopic hernia and bariatric surgeries to the students, and some simpler procedures too. We have made arrangements for students to ask queries,” said Dr. Rajkumar.
Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom, president of the Maldives, will inaugurate the session from the island nation. Dr. Rajkumar said they are open to linking with private medical colleges in the country for online sessions.
