A. Hamsa, a domestic help in Thiruvanmiyur, didn’t think much of the time and effort she took with her employers’ son, who suffers from autism.
After all, the boy was as old as her son and she liked playing with him.
On Monday, Hamsa was chosen as an ambassador for autism by the family that employs her, and presented with an award at a public function.
“Every evening, when I go to work, he plays with me and helps me with my chores. I have been working at the house for eight years now,” she said, clutching the award given by WE CAN and SPASTN, at a function held at V.S. Sanjeevi auditorium, VHS.
Hamsa was among the 20 persons, including hairstylists, laundrymen, grocery store owners and doctors, who were honoured for going the extra mile in reaching out to children with autism.
R. Karthik, a hairstylist, said, one of his customers was a child with autism and dealing with him was indeed a challenge he enjoyed.
Actor Radhika Sarathkumar, joint commissioner (in-charge), office of the State commissioner of differently abled, Ravindranath Singh, WE CAN director, Gita Srikanth, and SPASTN director, L.V. Jayashree, also participated in the function.
