Int’l Coastal Clean-up Day observed

The Indian Coast Guard, along with the Tree Foundation, marked International Coastal Clean-up Day on Saturday in the city.

According to a press release, close to 3,000 people from the various units of the Coast Guard and student volunteers from schools and colleges, the National Cadet Corps and National Service Scheme, and NGOs participated in the programme.

The release said a road show, flagged off at Marina beach on Saturday at 7.45 a.m., was conducted to sensitise the public on conservation issues. This was followed by a clean-up, with garbage and litter removed from Marina and Elliots beaches, the release said. The release added that a Coast Guard helicopter also carried out an aerial recce of the beaches.

Mayor Saidai S. Duraisamy was the chief guest, and other officials were present, the release said.
