Residents of Second Cross Road, Raja Annamalaipuram, have a trying time as an untreated sewage line passes through an under-construction storm water drain (SWD) at the junction of Second Main Road and Second Cross Road and has become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. At First Cross Street, construction of a storm water drain is on and it should be complete before the onset of monsoon, residents said. Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board officials said, “The problem will be set right at the earliest.”
Recently, Raja Annamalaipuram Residents’ Association in association with Ramky Enviro Engineers, a private conservancy operator, took out a street walk to emphasise the proper disposal of garbage and maintain a litter-free street, R. Chandrasekaran, founder of the association, said.
“Once in three months, the association takes up a civic issue with the residents and conducts a study. We have planned to focus on commercial car parking, street lights, drainage, and storm water drains in the coming months. The street representatives and office-bearers of the association will conduct a meeting with the authorities periodically,” R. Chandrasekaran, founder of the association, said.
We have asked the residents to place the garbage bins at their doorsteps so that the conservancy staff would clear them. This way we have avoided garbage getting accumulated as heap on streets, he added.
