A few weeks ago, a resident of Avadi found a female dog, which had delivered five pups, in her bathroom which was under construction. The family took good care of the pups and the mother, but a taxi driver living in the locality hated the sight of the dogs and considered them a menace.

He often threatened he would kill them. According to a post on Facebook Page of the Blue Cross of India on November 10, the taxi driver brutally killed the mother of the pups and dragged the corpse to the next street. Dawn William, the General Manager of Blue Cross, filed an FIR and the culprit was arrested.

The pups were rescued by the organisation and they will be looking for a home at "Adopt-a-thon’ that will be held today at No. 72, Velachery Main Road , Guindy, from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“There will be more than 50 healthy puppies and kittens available for adoption. All have a survival story,” says R. Srikanth, a senior volunteer with the Blue Cross. He hopes that most of these animals will find a suitable home.

The popularity of adoption drives testifies to the awareness among animal lovers. At the last Adopt-a-thon event, around 50 pups and kittens were adopted.

An IT professional decided to celebrate Deepavali by bringing in a new family member home. He came to the Blue Cross looking for the loneliest dog at the shelter and in the end took back home a friend for life. “Indian breeds deserve a chance as they don’t fall sick as often as foreign breeds, because, with breeders, you never know how healthy the mother and her pups are. Many celebrities too are promoting adoption of Indian breeds,” says Srikanth. Also up for adoption are abandoned adult pedigree dogs. Making the event more special will be Edward Pugh, who will run the Wipro Chennai Marathon to raise funds for The Blue Cross of India's 50th Year Rescue Fund.
