A 52-year-old woman was found dead with her throat slit inside her house in Perambur on Wednesday evening. Police have arrested a 21-year-old youth in connection with the crime.

Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar police Durgadevi Ramachandran, a money lender, was found lying in a pool of blood in her one-bedroom house in Maduraisamy Madam East Street by her daughter Hemalatha when she came to visit her mother from Ranipet around 5.30 p.m. Gold jewellery, including the chain she was wearing, was missing.

Investigators believe Durgadevi was allegedly murdered on Tuesday night by Karthik (21), a railway conservancy worker residing in Bricklin Road, Purusawalkam.

The youth had befriended the victim and realising that she had jewellery in her possession, slit her throat when he came to her residence on Tuesday night, police said.

Karthik left her to bleed to death and fled with a ring, a pair of earrings and the chain she was wearing that together weighed 10 sovereigns. An investigation team picked him up and seized the stolen jewellery within hours.

Youth hacked to death A gang brutally hacked a youth to death in full public view at Luz Corner in Mylapore on Wednesday afternoon.

Mylapore police identified the deceased as Tamilchelvan (24), a driver and a resident of Madhavarao Nagar. The murder took place near the Luz signal around 3.45 p.m. when the assailants on a motorcycle chased Tamilchelvan and hacked him.

Investigation has revealed that Tamilchelvan had a tiff with an elderly woman in the locality a few days ago after he and his friend teased her grandson.

The duo had pushed the woman following which she had informed her son, a history-sheeter, who the police suspect could have committed the murder along with his aides.
