Three men, including music director Harris Jayaraj’s driver, who threatened to kidnap the director and his children, were apprehended by the police on Monday.

Search is on for another suspect who was part of the plot.

Sources with the Valsaravakkam police said Jayaraj’s wife Suma first received a call on her mobile phone on Sunday night. “The caller threatened to kidnap her husband and their children if she failed to pay Rs. 20 lakh. She ignored the call assuming it to be a prank. But the suspect called again on Monday morning and asked for the money,” said an investigating officer.

Suma contacted the city police who tracked the phone call to a location in Tirusulam.

A special team rounded up Mr. Jayaraj’s driver Thirumalai (32), and his aides Arunachalapandian (25) and Muthukrishnan (33), all natives of Tirunelveli. Another accomplice, Mahesh, managed to flee.

The men are expected to be produced at a city court on Tuesday afternoon and will be remanded to judicial custody and sent to prison, sources said.
