A 19-year-old girl student of Sri Ramachandra University committed suicide at the college hostel on Monday evening.
The police arrested a hostelmate on Tuesday, charging her with abetment of suicide (Section 306 IPC).
Sources with the SRMC police in Porur said K. Yogalakshmi (19), a native of Kancheepuram, in her second year of B.Sc. Emergency and Trauma Care course, was found hanging inside her hostel room by her collegemates around 6 p.m. on Monday.
“We recovered a suicide note in which she had stated that she was taking the extreme step after being repeatedly tortured by her senior Kotteshwari (21), a third-year student,” said an investigating officer with the SRMC police.
A preliminary probe by the police revealed that Kotteshwari was infuriated that her ex-boyfriend was interested in Yogalakshmi, and began to harass her.
Speaking to mediapersons outside Government Royapettah Hospital mortuary on Tuesday afternoon, Yogalakshmi’s parents, Kamalakannan and Komalavalli, stated their daughter had told them she had complained to university authorities against her senior.
“Even last week she told me of being locked up in the toilet by her senior. Pushed too far, my child committed suicide,” Komalavalli said.
SuspendedAccording to sources with Sri Ramachandra University, Kotteshwari was placed under suspension after police action was initiated against her.
The college authorities are carrying out an internal probe.
