The city police have busted a gang of chain-snatchers who flew down from Karnataka to operate in Chennai and used motorcycles shipped to the city to target women pedestrians.

Four suspects have been arrested and two motorcycles used by the gang were seized.

Police sources named the suspects as Murtaza Ali (27) and Arslan Ali (26), both from Madhya Pradesh, and Sartaj Ali (36) and Sunil Kumar (23), from Karnataka. The four men who are part of a chain-snatching gang based in Bidar district, Karnataka, had arrived in Chennai by train with the two motorcycles.

“The suspects parked the motorcycles at parking lots in the city and left by air after committing the offences. They struck at various other cities, including Hyderabad, Bangalore and Bhopal, and frequently visited Chennai in the last few months,” said an investigating officer.

A special team probing the crimes apprehended the four men on Wednesday evening. Further investigation is under way to recover the stolen gold, the sources added.
