Violinist celebrates 75th birthday

Disciples of violinist maestro, Dr. M. Chandrasekaran, celebrated his 75th birthday on November 22 at Dakshinamurthy Auditorium, Mylapore.

The function started with mangala isai by Thirumeignanam Brothers followed by guru vandanam by grand disciples of Dr. M. Chandrasekaran who scripted a ragamaaliga of 75 ragas on violin.

Padma Bhushan M.S. Gopalakrishnan, who presided over the function, said “Chandrasekaran is an exemplary violinist.” Padma Bhushan P.S. Narayanaswamy said, “Chandrasekaran is not only a maestro but a gem of a person to associate with.” Galaxy of renowned musicians recalled their association through video recordings that were screened during the function.

About the violinist

Dr. Chandrasekaran has an illustrious musical journey of 63 years since he made his debut performance in 1949 as a child prodigy. He owes his success to his mother Charubala Mohan and the Trust he runs in his mother’s name takes pride in identifying talented musicians and honouring them every year.

Dr. Chandrasekaran developed a unique style for himself and has won the hearts of thousands of music lovers all over the world. He is known for his nadaswaram touches on the violin. He is also an accomplished vocalist and composer. He has given performances extensively across the world.

Dr. Chandrasekaran received the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship (Akademi Ratna Sadasyata) from the President of India in October 2012. Last year, he was conferred Honorary Doctorate for his contributions to Carnatic music by Tumkur University.
