A series of chain, phone, or bag snatching in different parts of the city during the weekend kept the policemen on their toes.

Eight cases were reported since Saturday evening. In two cases, the public caught the thieves and handed them over to the police.

Three cases were reported in Mylapore.

Anjala of Kuil Thottam, Mylapore, was walking near her house on Sunday when two men riding a motorcycle snatched her chain.

In another robbery near Nochikuppam on Sunday morning, a motorcyclist snatched a gold chain from Mallika, who was standing outside her house.

The third case was reported in Karneswarar Koil Street, Mylapore, when a motorcyclist snatched the gold chain of Amudha, a resident of the street.

The police have registered cases.

On Saturday evening, Pankajam was riding pillion on her husband’s bike on Kamarajar Salai when two men on a bike snatched her bag containing a mobile phone and cash.

A man robbed Pravin Kumar, a software professional, at knifepoint on Saturday evening.

Pravin Kumar parked his motorcycle near the Thoraipakkam police station as it was raining and was talking to his friend when he was robbed.

At the Moolakadai bus stand, two persons snatched a mobile phone from a woman on Saturday evening.

The public chased and caught the duo and handed them over to the police.

MTC bus

A 16-year-old boy was caught and handed over to the police when he lifted a mobile phone from a passenger on an MTC bus in Velachery.

“It has become risky to go on morning walks,” said K. Amudhan, a resident of Anna Nagar.

‘Isolated cases’

Police officials said they were all isolated cases.

“Most people who commit such offences are teenagers or youths who sell the loot for a very low price and use the money to either purchase alcohol or drugs. Some of them indulge in gambling too,” said a police officer.

He emphasised that patrolling in the city had been improved.
