Chain-snatchers, thieves have a field day

Four cases reported on a single day

Four incidents of chain snatching and theft were reported from different parts of the city on Tuesday.

Jebathangam, a resident of Nancy Street in Vepery, was returning home after visiting a relative. She was walking down Tana Street at 10.30 p.m. when a motorcycle-borne duo followed her.

The pillion rider snatched her chain weighing 12 sovereigns and the duo fled the scene.

A similar crime was reported near the Kilpauk police station on Tuesday night.

Vanaja, 60 of Chetpet was walking on Pachaiyappa’s College Hostel Road to visit her daughter. Unidentified persons who came on a motorcycle snatched her 5-sovereign chain and sped away.

In Velachery, Balu, a retired professor, locked the door of his house and kept the key at a safe place before heading out. On his return, he found his house was open and 25 sovereigns of jewellery kept inside a steel bureau were missing.

Similarly, unidentified persons broke into the house of Nandakumar, 72, on Ellaiyappan Street and made away with gold jewellery weighing 25 sovereigns, as well as other valuables.
