The Central Crime Branch (CCB) of City Police on Monday began a probe into a complaint lodged by a Regional Deputy Director, Department of Prosecution, who alleged that several medical aspirants from other states obtained seats under the government quota after producing nativity certificates.

Last week, Y. Amjad Ali of Tindivanam, a regional deputy director of Department of Prosecution, lodged a complaint with Chennai Commissioner of Police A.K. Viswanathan that nine candidates featuring in the MBBS and BDS merit list had submitted nativity certificates for counselling in both Tamil Nadu and Kerala. He claimed that the medical aspirants committed fraud by applying for medical seats under the government quota in both states based on these nativity certificates.

Mr. Ali said his daughter Saadhiya Tabassum who completed 12th standard last year was not able to get admission since her score did not meet the prescribed cut-off. Again she appeared for National Eligibility Exam-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and scored 273 marks. She stood in 171st in Backward Class - Muslim quota and could not get a seat in a government college. Hence she had to take a seat under the self-finance category.

Mr. Ali said after going through the rank list of candidates he found more Muslim candidates. On suspicion, he verified the rank list released by Kerala Medical Board and found that some candidates had applied for medical admission in both states as if they were residents of Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Mr. Ali pointed out nine candidates had applied for medical admission by submitting nativity certificates with ulterior motive of grabbing seats meant for students of Tamil Nadu. “It is clear that students in Kerala had applied in Tamil Nadu as they might not get admission in their home states. The prospectus of TN Medical Admission clearly states that the parents and their wards will be subjected to criminal action if they are found to have indulged in submitting nativity certificates in fraudulent manner,” he said.

An Assistant Commissioner of Police attached with CCB said, “We interrogated a few aspirants based on the complaint given by Mr. Ali and summoned a few others for interrogation. A couple of them met eligibility creteria since they have studied from 8th standard in the State. We are thoroughly examining the allegations.”

Meanwhile Ali said, “My estimate is that over 500 candidates from other states have submitted false nativity certificates to get allotment of seats in Tamil Nadu.”
